Polycount Character Challenge!

So I've decided to participate in the Polycount community character challenge here. The subject is actually a Medieval foot soldier so I've put the previous project on hold. It might be cool to create a scene with two characters in but for now I'm focusing on the Polycount challenge. Here's where I am so far:

Concept is here. I've started the challenge pretty late but it's going well so far! I'm hoping to have it finished before March so there should be quite a few updates in the coming days!

Knight Guy / Marmoset 2.0!

Here are a few images from something I found some time to work on over the weekend. I bought myself a copy of Marmoset Toolbag 2 and Substance Designer 4 over Christmas and they're really cool pieces of software! I'm starting a bust that I'll take into Marmoset and use all the shiny new "next gen" features that Marmoset has to offer to make a realistic looking realtime character. So far I've worked on the bust and blocked out a few pieces of armour:

I've prematurely taken some stuff into Marmoset to see how it looks, far too early but I couldn't wait to play with some of the shaders :D Here's a decimated version of the mesh with a really simple skin shader applied. The PBR works really robustly under lots of different lighting conditions, I think I'll be able to get some great results with a few maps plugged into the shader, exciting stuff!

I also worked on a physically accurate eye shader, complete with sub surface scattering and parallax occluded pupil. The textures are extremely rough at this point but it's amazing that all these features are realtime, the next generation is definitely going to be exciting! I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into Substance to texture the armour as well, should have some results in a few days.

More Portraits/Hard Surface!

More portraits, 1/5th of the way to 100 woo! A few timelapses at the bottom, they are a bit of hassle to set up so I'll only record every couple from now on, but it's so interesting watching yourself work - particularly seeing where you waste time faffing.

I'm also trying to improve my hard surface skills, here are a couple of shapes - the bolt was pretty challenging, the spiral causes a lot of issues in the edgeflow!
