Gambit

I've finally got some time to update this blog, over the last few weeks I have been extremely busy. A lot of uni work culminates soon, including the dissertation, business module and pre production (as well as some GamesLab production work) so unfortunately the blog has been somewhat neglected. Having said that, there hasn't been all that much production work to upload (that isn't under NDA). I wanted to actually do some more work on the character I'm uploading today, but as time drags on I think I'd rather upload it sooner.

This was our "Introduction to Zbrush/Mudbox" module and it was really good fun. I chose to recreate a concept by Marko Djurdjevic, one of my favourite artists.

I learnt an unbelievable amount on this project, it was a fantastic opportunity to really put my knowledge of character modelling/texturing to the test. In the end the character was actually unfinished, although I do believe that it reached a fairly acceptable standard, had I had more time I think I could have produced something to really be proud of.
On a technical note I realise now that the specular colour map is almost completely wrong. I was aware that the specular colour of skin was blue. But rather than inverting the hue of the map I incorrectly added a blue overlay. What opened my eyes was a brilliant paper by Pedro Toledo found here. It's a really good read for anyone interested in advanced texturing.
